Psy'kits'ch'edelic Gazing: Dance of Dazzle(OME)
I have never ever seen an artist look so good on plastic pants. Her occasional black plastic pants (that she might be wearing right now, somewhere in the exhibition space) looks very alike with her gleamy glittering eyes making this swoosh-swoosh- sound. Indicatively exposing both 'Hwia Kim(or her artwork)' and 'Hwia Kim(or her artwork)'s Gazing'.
In the heart of Itaewon, {Psy'kits'ch'edelic Gazing}portrays psychedelic and kitsch gaze from its name itself. It's absolutely chaotic and frantic of how it should be read or meant. Rather than a chop logic (sophistry), Hwia Kim captivates us with her painful dazzle(OME) without hierarchy in the sandwich of chaos. Eyes running over inside and out, squints (or cockeyes) reacting and chasing me, her and our glance.
Hwia Kim's psychedelic goes way beyond the meaning of hallucinations and awakening states, but even makes us distrust and doubt the real world and outdo the existing perceptions and habitual senses inherent in us, consciously or unconsciously like it or not. As if we are fascinated by her kitsch plastic pants, we reach a state of intoxication beyond the narrow reasons within her art world ..
In the eyes of countless batters, shepherds of the ambition, Hwia Kim screams on top of her desire with suspicious eyes, "IDGAF, I'm in freaking chaos, it's a total dystopia, and I like this D.A.M.N world!" For truth that cannot be reached within an order, for irresistible impulses and pleasures, and for painful pleasures, 'take off your scream and shout your pants.'
Following Hwia Kim's gaze, I wonder if she was a butterfly. Psyche¹ of this era, pursuing the truth of soul and love despite the danger of catastrophe. Today, let us all be her 'Eros' and sting her the dazzle (OME) at the target. (=chaos)

Psy’kits’ch’edelic Gazing: 눈뽕의 춤
나는 비닐 팬츠가 그렇게 잘 어울리는 작가를 본적이 없다. 그녀가 종종 입는(오늘도 전시 공간 어딘가에서 입고 있을지 모르는) 검정 비닐 팬츠는 그녀의 눈빛과 닮아 늘 반짝이며, 씌익씌익 소리를 낸다. ‘김휘아(의 작업)와 ‘김휘아(의 작업)의 응시’가 거기 있음을 징후적으로 드러내듯.
이태원 한복판에서 펼쳐지는 《싸이키치델릭 게이징 Psy’kits’ch’edelic Gazing》은 그 이름에서부터 싸이키델릭(psychedelic)하고 키치(kitsch)한 응시를 보여준다. 당최 어떻게 읽을지, 무슨 말인지 표기부터 혼돈이다. 김휘아는 궤변을 늘어놓기보다는 혼돈 가운데 위계 없이 고통스런 눈뽕으로 우리를 사로잡는다. 안팎을 횡단하는 눈알, 나와 반응하고 나를 따라다니는 사팔뜨기들, 그녀와 우리의 눈빛.
김휘아의 싸이키델릭은 환각, 각성 상태라는 의미를 훌쩍 넘음과 동시에, 현실 세계를 의심하게 하며, 의식적이든 무의식적이든 우리에게 내재된 기존의 인식과 습관적 감각을 초월한다. 마치 그녀의 키치한 비닐 팬츠에 매료되듯 우리는 그녀의 예술 세계 안에서 협소했던 사유를 넘어서는 도취 상태에 도달한다.
욕망을 이끄는 수많은 타자의 눈빛 안에서 김휘아는 의심의 눈초리로 “에라 모르겠어, 난 망할 혼돈이고, 디스토피아고, 이런 세계가 좋아!”를 외친다. 질서 안에서는 도달할 수 없는 진리를 향해, 제어할 수 없는 충동과 즐거움을 향해, 고통스러운 쾌락을 향해 소리 벗고 팬츠 지른다.
김휘아의 시선을 따라가다 보면 어쩜 그녀는 한 마리 나비가 아니었을까 한다. 파국의 위험 안에서도 영혼과 사랑의 진리로 향하는 이 시대의 ‘프시케’(Psyche)¹. 오늘은 그녀의 ‘에로스(Eros)’가 되어 혼돈의 과녁을 향해 의심의 눈뽕을 쏴보자.

¹ 싸이키델릭(psychedelic)의 싸이키(psyche)는 정신, 영혼, 마음의 뜻을 가지고 있다. 이를 그리스어로 읽으면 프시케(Psyche)로 그리스 로마 신화에서 에로스(Eros)와 사랑을 나눈 공주의 이름과 같다.
